When it comes to the price of steel and concrete, the homebuilding industry has a reputation for being hard to get right.
But the latest research suggests that a lot of the work can be done in a relatively short period of time.
The new study from the US National Science Foundation (NSF) suggests that steel-framed buildings with steel beams are cheaper to build than traditional buildings with concrete cores.
And if you’re looking for a more environmentally friendly way to build, the study finds that building a steel-frame home with steel supports can also save energy.
The study’s lead author is Matthew Hulley, an associate professor of civil and environmental engineering at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.
“Building a steel home requires significant energy,” Hulleys said.
“We don’t need to have a bunch of giant furnaces running around.
In fact, we can make the furnaces less energy-intensive with steel.”
In the US, the average cost of a steel roofing unit is about $8,000 per unit, but that can go up to more than $10,000 depending on the type of building, the size of the roof, and the materials used.
“That’s a lot higher than most other building types,” said Andrew Bader, the NSF’s deputy director for energy.
“It’s kind of surprising that a typical roofing contractor would be able to pay $8 million for a single roof.”
But the new study shows that building steel roofs can be relatively inexpensive to do.
The cost per square foot is less than 1% of a typical steel roof’s cost per floor square.
That makes it a great choice for people who need to get their home up and running quickly, Bader said.
The average cost per year of building a new steel roof was about $1,000, but it could be done for as little as $400,000.
“I think that’s a pretty cheap price for building a concrete roof, but steel can be made more affordable by just adding some steel to the building,” Bader added.
“The steel makes the roof a lot more durable.”
Bader and his colleagues built a steel house on a trailer park property in southern Illinois.
They installed steel framing in the basement, built a concrete foundation, and used cement to reinforce the steel frame.
They used the same steel for the roofing and concrete floors as the standard concrete.
“There are a number of advantages of steel,” Hynley said.
For one, it’s a strong material.
“As a steel core, it has a higher strength than concrete,” he said.
And as a concrete core, steel can hold more moisture.
The steel core can also be a lot cheaper.
A typical building with concrete supports can cost $8m, but the cost of building steel can run as low as $1m per square meter.
“So you can use a lot less of the materials,” Bades said.
That means that steel can save you money on the energy used in building.
Bader also points out that a steel structure can be more environmentally-friendly than concrete.
A steel building is generally made from a combination of materials, like steel, concrete, and timber.
And the structural components of a building, like the roof and foundation, are typically made from steel.
The NSF study found that steel buildings have been shown to have less air pollution than concrete buildings, and less carbon emissions per square kilometer than concrete ones.
The researchers also found that building with steel also saved energy when it came to energy efficiency.
The paper’s findings were published in the American Journal of Civil and Environmental Engineering.
“These results show that building an electric home with a steel construction system is not only economical, but also environmentally-conscious,” Bimmer said.
Bade said he thinks steel can make a huge difference to the cost and sustainability of building homes.
“Steel is very, very cheap, and it’s very environmentally-considered,” he added.
Bades, Hulles, and Bader hope that their findings help spark interest in building homes with steel.
“In my own experience, a lot is about what I want to build and not what the building looks like,” Hilley said, adding that he would like to see more companies investing in research and development to better understand the properties of steel-clad buildings.
“One of the things that we’re trying to do is to have more people in the construction industry start to get a better sense of what is the best design,” Houlley said in a statement.
“People want to know what they can build for their family, and they don’t want to be living in a building that is very big or very expensive.”
