‘This is a big deal’: The rise of Mitsubishi’s new EV concept

The future of the Mitsubishis global car business is now firmly in place, as they set out to build a new vehicle to compete with the likes of Tesla, Tesla Model 3 and Nissan Leaf.

The new EV, called ‘Yone’ and unveiled at the Frankfurt Auto Show on Monday, is aimed at the emerging EV market and is expected to debut later this year.

The design is a mix of aluminium and steel, and has a range of 150 kilometres (93 miles) and will be powered by a 7.0-litre petrol engine, along with an electric motor and a hybrid drivetrain.

The Japanese automaker says the Yone will have a range between 150 to 200 kilometres on a single charge, and the new EV will have the same range as the Nissan Leaf, and will also be lighter than other EVs. 

Its main selling point is that it will be the first EV to be made entirely in Japan, instead of importing parts from overseas.

This has been the plan for a while, Mitsubushi said, but it has been taken into account as it looks to make a more efficient and affordable EV. 

It is expected that the Yones new design will be offered in Japan and the US.

In addition to the new Yones concept, Mitsushis new EV prototype was also unveiled at Frankfurt, with the goal of building a production vehicle by 2020.

This is an important step in the path Mitsubisha is aiming for in the EV industry, said Mitsubus president Kazuhiro Hirano, adding that Mitsubishes goal was to make it possible for Mitsubis customers to purchase a car in Japan.

“We are very happy to announce the unveiling of the YONE,” Hirano said.

“It is a step in a new direction for the Mitsushishis company, which is aiming to be the world’s largest EV maker.” 

Yone will be Mitsubisa’s first EV, after the company unveiled a prototype of its latest SUV, the Mitsuba, at the beginning of this year, and they have been working hard on their new car since then.

The Mitsuboshi brand has been growing at a very rapid pace in recent years, and this new vehicle is a further boost for the brand, as its flagship model has enjoyed a strong launch in the United States. 

The company plans to introduce the YOne in 2019, and Mitsubashis new SUV, a crossover SUV, is due for delivery in 2020. 

Mitsubishi is aiming at becoming the world leader in electric vehicles, with Mitsubusa currently selling more than 3,600 electric cars in the US and Europe.
